The Government has improved on both the 2PP and the primary vote. It received a one point increase in 2PP support, which while still trailing Labor (52%/48%), is the best result for the Government since April 2017. The Government also moved forward by two percentage points to pull just ahead of Labor on primary vote (38%/37%).

Despite the positive note, this was the 26th Newspoll in a row that the Coalition has trailed Labor on 2PP.

The Newspoll also showed that the Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP received a four per cent jump in support as preferred Prime Minister, and continues to enjoy a commanding advantage over Opposition Leader, the Hon Bill Shorten MP (45%/31%).

The poll also asked voters who they would prefer as Labor leader. Among all voters, Labor Deputy Leader, the Hon Tanya Plibersek MP, is the preferred party leader, on 52%, followed closely by the Hon Anthony Albanese MP, on 24 %. Mr Shorten was narrowly behind on 22%, with 29% of voters undecided.
