Minister for Health, the Hon Greg Hunt MP, continued to make announcements on a number of issues over the Christmas period, including a joint media release with the minister responsible for organ and tissue donation, the Hon Ken Wyatt MP AM, encouraging Australians to make organ donation their New Years’ resolution.

Since Parliament rose, Minister Hunt has announced:

  • $300 million for new cancer medications
  • $110 million to expand mental health programs for young people
  • An expert inquiry into Out-Of-Pocket medical costs to look at specialists’ charging rates
  • $8 million for cancer research, and
  • $3 million for medical equipment at surf life-saving clubs.

Minister Hunt also confirmed the Turnbull Government will allow the exportation of medicinal cannabis which is expected to increase the supply available to domestic users as Australian growers expand their crops.

The Government also rejected what could be the first wave of the Australian Medical Association’s (AMA) push for a ‘Sugar Tax’. The AMA indicated that it will continue to pressure the Government on key policy issues.
