On Thursday, Facebook and a number of its apps – Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger – went down for almost a full day across parts of North America, Europe and Australia.

In its most severe outage ever, the company said that the outages were due to a ‘server configuration change’.

The issues have now been resolved, but with more than six million advertisers operating on Facebook and Instagram, the loss of revenue from the outage remains to be calculated. There were even reports of disgruntled users calling emergency services to report the outage.

With many countries currently discussing whether or not tech giants should be broken up, the fallout from this outage is sure to contribute to the ongoing conversation about the influence of large technology firms.
