In further changes to the GST pool, it was announced on Wednesday that state and territory treasurers have unanimously agreed to make feminine hygiene products exempt from the GST from 1 January 2019.

The move follows an almost two-decade push to remove the items, as other essential products such as food and medical supplies are not subject to the tax. Expected to cost the GST pool approximately $30 million a year, the change was signed off at a COAG meeting of treasurers in Melbourne on Wednesday.

Minister for Women, the Hon Kelly O’Dwyer MP, said that “millions of women right across the nation will be very thankful” for the change.
