In a long-awaited resolution to the disagreement with the Catholic and independent school sectors, the Morrison Government will provide an additional $4.6 billion to private schools.

Announced by Prime Minister, the Hon Scott Morrison MP and newly minted Education Minister, the Hon Dan Tehan MP, in a press conference on Thursday, the plan was recommended by the National School Resourcing Board and will involve transitioning to a new method of calculating how non-state schools are funded by 2020.

In a media release, the Prime Minister stated that ‘a vibrant, fairly funded non-government school sector ensures parents retain the choice of where to send their kids to school. The non-government system provides an alternative which improves standards and competition across the board, while also alleviating pressure on the state system’.

Shadow Education Minister, the Hon Tanya Plibersek MP, criticised the plan.

‘We don’t believe this restores all of the money that has been cut from Catholic and independent schools… this is still billions of dollars less than all schools would have got under the original arrangements struck by Labor’ she said.
