On Wednesday night, members on both sides of the Parliament put aside their political differences as they attended the annual Midwinter Ball in the Great Hall of Parliament House.

Since its inception in 2000, the Midwinter Ball as raised $4.1 million for a variety of charities, with over $275,000 raised in this year alone.

In a night relatively free from controversy, a surprising moment saw Fairfax Media photographer Mr Alex Ellinghausen named as Press Gallery Journalist of the Year. It is the first time that a photographer has won Australia’s most prestigious award for political journalism. The judging panel said:

‘In a strong field of quality work by brilliant veterans and rising young stars, Alex Ellinghausen’s stunning photojournalism was the standout entry this year.’

Many who know Alex’s work would not be surprised by the award?—?he has captured some significant moments in political history, and has a great skill in being able to show the human side of our politicians?—?check out this week’s tweet of the week as a great example.
