Federal financial assistance for the bushfire affected regions in the Southern Grampians (Victoria) and Tathra (New South Wales) was activated on Monday through the jointly funded Commonwealth (75 per cent)?—?State (25 per cent) Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).

The assistance was announced by the Prime Minister, the Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP, and the Minister for Law Enforcement, Cyber Security and Emergency Services, the Hon Angus Taylor MP.

Victorian Minister for Emergency Services, James Merlino, said that Emergency Re-establishment Assistance was available for affected households in addition to the Personal Hardship Assistance Payments. The Emergency Re-establishment Assistance provides approximately $40,000 which can be used to cover the costs of clean-up, accommodation, repairs, rebuilding and replacing damaged contents. The Personal Hardship Assistance Payments provides up to $540 per adult and $270 per child (with a maximum $1,890 per household) for immediate requirements including food, shelter, clothing, and personal items.

Disaster assistance for the government area of Bega, including the affected areas around Tathra, was also made available under the NDRRA. The Federal Government funding aims to help eligible people whose homes or belongings have been damaged, as well as assist the local councils with the costs of restoring essential public assets. The funding will also provide:

  • concessional interest rate loans for small businesses, primary producers and non-profit organisations
? freight subsidies for primary producers, and
? grants to eligible non-profit organisations.

This financial relief comes in addition to the NSW appointment of a disaster coordinator-general, Ewen Ferguson.
