Following last week’s turmoil that saw the loss of both the ABC’s managing director, Ms Michelle Guthrie, and chairman, Mr Justin Milne, the ABC board confirmed on Thursday that it had established an independent investigation into concerns raised by Ms Guthrie just days before her contract was terminated.

In a statement, the board stated that it “has always acted in the best interests of the ABC, has fully debated any issues presented to it and ensured that editorial independence has been maintained”.

Mr David Anderson has stepped in as acting managing director, while Dr Kirstin Ferguson has been appointed interim chair.

Following claims that Minister for Communications and the Arts, Senator the Hon Mitch Fifield, had in the past disregarded the recommendations made by the independent panel that evaluates board appointments for the broadcaster, Labor called for the selection process to be “depoliticised”.

Senator Fifield last week ordered that Secretary of the Department of Communications and the Arts, Mr Mike Mrdak AO, “undertake an inquiry to establish the facts in relation to… media reports surrounding the ABC”– this investigation is ongoing.
