On Tuesday, the Prime Minister, the Hon Scott Morrison MP, said the Government was considering moving Australia’s embassy in the Jewish state from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. The Prime Minister said that the Government would be reviewing Australia’s foreign policy approach to the region, and that new ideas were needed to achieve a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine.

“We’re committed to a two-state solution, but frankly, it hasn’t been going that well, not a lot of progress has been made, and you don’t keep doing the same thing and expect different results” said the Prime Minister.

This move would mirror that of the United States, which moved its embassy to a new building in Jerusalem in May of this year.

The Prime Minister noted that the timing of the review coincided with the intention of the Government to oppose a United Nations vote on whether the Palestinian Authority should chair a group of developing nations.

Representatives from 13 Middle Eastern and North African embassies, including Indonesia, have signalled their displeasure with this supposed change in policy.
