On Tuesday, U.S. citizens took to the polls in the long-awaited midterm elections. Compared to the 39% voter turn-out at the 2014 midterms, this year 48% of eligible voters exercised their right to vote, making it the first midterm election to exceed 100 million votes.

There was a record-breaking 92 women elected to the 435-member House of Representatives. Among them, Ms Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will be the youngest woman to serve in the House at 29 years of age, Ms Sharice Davidswill be one of the first Native American women elected and Ms Illhan Omarand Ms Rashida Tlaib will be the first Muslim women in Congress.

The Democrats took control of the House of Representatives with 218 seats, winning Republican-held seats in Colorado, Kansas, Florida, New York, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Virginia. This was a positive result for the Democrats, but a smaller victory than they hoped for.

With an opposition majority in the House, it is likely that the legislative arm of Congress will be fairly ineffective during the next two years. Democrats are now able to block the Republican agenda and are expected to launch several investigations into the President and his administration.
