In international news, the growing tension between the United States and China dominated the dialogue of the Asia-Pacific Economic Forum (APEC) summit in Port Moresby.

For the first time in the history of the summit, leaders were unable to reach a consensus on the final communique, with the two regional powers disagreeing on the language on trade in the final document.

Prime Minister Morrison called for the tensions to be resolved, citing recent assessments that the dispute would negatively impact regional economic growth.

Australia made positive contributions to the summit, joining with Japan and the US to make new infrastructure commitments, including the promise to bring electricity to 70% of the Papua New Guinean population by 2030.

Further, Australia will be linking with the US and Papua New Guinea to upgrade a naval base on Manus Island.

These infrastructure measures will be crucial in further enhancing Australian influence in the Asia-Pacific region.
