Over thirty years since the disappearance of Mrs Lynette Dawson, her husband Mr Chris Dawson has been arrested in Queensland and extradited to New South Wales, where he has been charged with her murder.
Although it was twice ruled by the New South Wales Coroner that it was most likely that Mr Dawson- a former rugby player and high school teacher- had killed his wife, the director of public prosecutions declined to pursue charges due to a lack of evidence. Mrs Dawson’s remains have never been found.
Interest in the case, which until now had not resulted in a prosecution, increased with the release of The Australian’s podcast ‘The Teacher’s Pet’, which examined Mrs Dawson’s disappearance and attracted 27 million listeners worldwide.
Producers of ‘The Teacher’s Pet’, journalist Mr Hedley Thomas and producer Mr Slade Gibson, were awarded the 2018 Gold Walkley Award for the podcast, which judges described as ‘a masterclass in investigative journalism’.
Mr Dawson was denied bail during his appearance in Central Local Court, and is due to reappear in court later in December.
