This week, the Government’s e-health record went from being opt-in to opt-out, giving Australians who want to opt-out of the electronic health record keeping system three months to do so.
The system has been operating for six years, with almost 6 million people enrolling under the voluntary opt-in system.
The Minister for Health, the Hon Greg Hunt MP, described the system as “an online summary of your individual health information and [that] allows you for the first time to access your own information as well as to have your own lifetime records.”
The Minister reiterated the ability of individuals to opt-out should they wish to do so, and highlighted that the system was about giving patients control of their information.
The Shadow Minister for Health, the Hon Catherine King MP, stated that while Labor supports e-health, it needs to be implemented by a competent government, using the opportunity to question the competency of the current Government, stating:
“But this Government is far from competent. They have a woeful record on IT security, privacy and basic digital functionality.”
Various organisations have publicly questioned the ability of the system to ensure patients’ information remains confidential, with the Government saying the claims were unfounded.
