This, week Minister for Health the Hon Greg Hunt MP announced new measures to tighten safeguards on the My Health digital health records to further protect patients and boost confidence in the system.
The changes address a number of concerns which have arisen about patient’s privacy and will force police and other government agencies to obtain a court order before any records can be obtained.
The changes will also allow patients to have records deleted when they opt out of the system in the future.
Mr Hunt stated:
“That just gives additional reassurance and additional protection for all Australians and it was important to the medical community,”
“If you opt out, you either will never have a record or if you’ve had one, it will be deleted forever,”
“The medical community said it was important to have the additional reassurance, and we have responded.”
Labor’s Shadow Minister for Health, the Hon Catherine King MP, responded to the changes by again calling on the Government to suspend the rollout of the program, stating:
“We don’t believe that anything less than a suspension of the opt-out of the My Health Record, whilst the Government rebuilds community trust in the My Health Record, will be sufficient.”
