Yesterday, State and Federal energy ministers met to discuss the National Energy Guarantee (NEG), which is designed to try to reduce electricity prices and carbon emissions while ensuring a reliable power supply.

It is understood the State ministers have given in-principle support for the plan to progress in its current form.

However, Labor States have held off on officially agreeing to the NEG, with Victoria’s Energy Minister, the Hon Lily D’Ambrosio MP, said agreeing to the plan today would be agreeing “with a blindfold on”.

Ms D’Ambrosio said Victoria would wait until Federal Minister for the Environment and Energy, the Hon Josh Frydenberg MP, had taken the proposal back to the Coalition party room and won Senate approval for it.

The Federal Government has now released a draft version of the energy bill and will take it to next week’s Coalition Party Room meeting for approval.

If Coalition MPs accept the draft legislation without changes, the energy plan will be implemented.
