This week there has been significant focus on the circumstances which led to $444 million being granted to the Great Barrier Reef Foundation. The grant was included in the Budget process, however questions have been asked regarding the process for granting the money.
In response, the Senate Standing Committees on Environment and Communications has set up an inquiry into the Great Barrier Reef 2050 Partnership Program.
The Great Barrier Reef Foundation is a small environmental charity with a board comprised of representatives of Australian business, science and philanthropy. It was supported by companies including BHP, Qantas, Rio Tinto, Google and Orica.
The Great Barrier Reef Foundation also has very few employees?—?at the time of the announcement of the funding, with six full-time staff and five part-time.
You can expect the large amount of funding to receive attention when Parliament resumes next week.
