Following Senator Fraser Anning’s widely-condemned first speech on Tuesday, both major parties combined to condemn the new Senator’s rhetoric. The Prime Minister, the Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP and Leader of the Opposition, the Hon Bill Shorten MP, attacked the speech in the House, and shook hands across the aisle in a show of bipartisanship. The Minister for the Environment and Energy, the Hon Josh Frydenberg MP, embraced his friend and Opposition Shadow Minister for the Digital Economy, Ed Husic MP, after his speech critiquing the Senator “as much as weapons wound, so do words”, Mr Husic said.
Later in the week, the Hon Tony Bourke MP, Minister of Opposition Business in the House of Representatives, indicated that Labor would reconsider its position on its preferencing of the Katter Australia Party. This could have significant implications for results in Queensland in the next Federal Election.
