In a late-night meeting on Monday night, Prime Minister the Hon Scott Morrison MP led his party to a rule change that would ensure that a Liberal prime minister in their first term could only be removed by a two-thirds majority vote.
The rule change was developed by the party whips, in consultation with past leaders of the Liberal party.
Reflecting similar changes made to Labor partyroom rules after its own leadership turmoil, it is hoped that the rule change will prevent the leadership instability that has dominated Australian politics for the past decade.
‘We’ve seen it on both sides of politics. We understand that disappointment, we understand that frustration. We acknowledge it and we take responsibility for it,’said the Prime Minister.
