In a new saga of the energy wars, the Leader of the Opposition, the Hon Bill Shorten MP, announced on Thursday Labor’s intention to keep the Turnbull Government’s National Energy Guarantee on the table, in a bid to lower energy prices and carbon emissions.

As Opposition Leader, I am prepared to work with you to implement a meaningful NEG framework that actually lowers power prices, reduces pollution, and delivers on our commitment for 50 per cent renewable energy by 2030’, said Mr Shorten.

Labor also committed to an additional $15 billion in funding for the national energy network, and to subsidising solar storage batteries for 100,000 households.

The Labor policy proposes an emissions reduction target of 45%, and aims to have renewables achieve a 50% share of the electricity market by 2030.

Minister for Energy, the Hon Angus Taylor MP, criticised the policy, commenting that ‘if we want to be a country that keeps making things, you have to have an electricity system that’s affordable but can provide that reliable power’.

As bipartisanship appears to remain off the table in the eyes of the Government, it is likely that energy will remain the divisive issue in the coming campaign for the Federal Election.
