On Friday, the national integrity committee of the Australia Institute launched their proposed design of a federal anti-corruption body.
The committee, which features the former NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption commissioner Mr David Ipp AO QC, and former NSW supreme court judge, the Hon Anthony Whealey QC, released a blueprint proposing an organisation with an independent commissioner, investigatory powers and the authority to accept complaints in any form and from anonymous sources.
“It’s no good setting up a body that can’t ferret out corruption… if you don’t give the body that sort of powers, it will simply fail,” Mr Whealey said.
Mr Ipp said that he found it surprising that the federal Government would not support such a body. The Australia Institute has reportedly written to the Prime Minister regarding the proposal. The Labor Party has made the support of such a body clear in its official policy.
