A week out from the COAG meeting to discuss the National Energy Guarantee (NEG), this week the ACT Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability, Mr Shane Rattenbury MLC, has indicated that the ACT Government would not support the NEG in its current form.
Mr Rattenbury said the NEG was “cobbled together out of bits and pieces” of policy, stating:
“Unfortunately, in its current form, the NEG is largely false advertising, won’t achieve what it promises, and in fact it is likely to have a negative impact in all of the areas it claims to improve,”.
Federal Minister for Finance, Senator the Hon Mathias Cormann, confirmed the Government’s ongoing support for the NEG, stating:
“The National Energy Guarantee is all about bringing down the price of electricity, about improving reliability of energy supplies and it is doing so in a technology neutral way, which is focused on bringing an end to Government subsidies and it is also focused on making sure that we get increased investment in energy generation and supplies, which will have to bring down the price of electricity.”
