Just a week after the Opposition Leader announced changes to the Shadow Ministry, Labor’s influential Shadow Minister for Families and Social Services, the Hon Jenny Macklin MP, has announced that she will not be recontesting the next election.

Ms Macklin served as families, community services and Indigenous affairs minister for six years and disability reform minister for two years.

Ms Macklin stated:

As the longest serving Labor woman in the House of Representatives, ever, ‘It’s Time’, as Gough so famously said, for me to move on.

Earlier in the week another sitting Labor MP, the member for Melbourne Ports, the Hon Michael Danby MP also announced he would not contest the election. Mr Danby is known for his staunch support of Israel.
