The Liberal Party has this morning selected the Member for Casey, Mr Tony Smith MP, as its nominee for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The nomination follows the resignation of the Hon Bronwyn Bishop MP from the position last week.

Mr Smith was first elected to parliament in 2001. He served as Parliamentary Secretary to former Prime Minister John Howard and in the Shadow Ministry when the Coalition was last in Opposition.

The election of Speaker will be the first item of business when the House of Representatives resumes at 10.00am this morning after the winter break.
