Today marked the opening day of the 44th Parliament.

In a largely ceremonial day, new Members were administered the Oath or Affirmation of Allegiance and a new Speaker of the House of Representatives elected.

As expected, the Hon Bronwyn bishop MP, was elected to preside over the new Parliament; the first woman from the conservative side of politics to assume the Parliament’s highest office.

Her Excellency the Governor-General delivered the Opening Speech which, by convention, is prepared by the Government of the day and outlines its forward legislative agenda.

Consistent with the Coalition’s pre-election commitments, several key priorities for the Abbott Government were identified, including:

  • Repealing the Carbon Tax
  • Building a strong, prosperous economy
  • Strengthening border protection
  • Building the roads of the 21st century
