The Minister for Education and Training, Senator the Hon Simon Birmingham, used a speech on Monday at the 68th International Astronautical Congress to announce Australia would create a new space agency.

“Australia recognises the benefits of a strong space industry which is why our government… announced a review into Australia’s space industry capability,” said the Education Minister. Speaking on the specifics of the agency’s charter, the Minister confirmed “(the) agency will be the anchor for our domestic coordination and the front door for our international engagement”.

According to analysis conducted by The Advertiser in Adelaide, the global space industry is worth more than $400 billion; in Australia it is worth about $4 billion and employs 11,500 workers.
