Biography

Peter Sykes has a strong understanding of business, in particular agribusiness, with over 20 years experience in large, medium and small businesses in the agricultural sector.

His broad experience ranges from the Boardroom table to the paddock. He has served as the Chairman of Shear Express Pty Ltd and was a long-serving board member of Australian Wool Innovation Limited. As a 6th generation farmer he continues to operate a 4500-acre wool and beef farming business on the foothills of the Snowy Mountains. In addition to these roles he has been the Managing Director of an agribusiness, worked at senior management level in the financial sector and founded the Australian operations of a European-based multinational.

Peter has worked with a wide array of businesses covering agribusiness, agriculture, financial and environmental markets, funds management, sustainability, product development and marketing.

At Nexus, Peter draws on his extensive experience to provide clients with government relations support in addition to providing advice on risk and reputation management, strategic issues management, market entry, export market development, policy analysis and preparation for inquiry submissions and appearances.

Peter has experience in working with some of Australia’s largest regional businesses, providing strategic advice, devising strategies and undertaken their government relations activities. He has also developed Corporate Social Responsibility strategies for large public companies.

Across a range of roles Peter has broad experience in the policy issues that face the agricultural sector having demonstrated experience with: live exports, animal health and welfare, biosecurity, food and fibre production, corporate farming, market entry, intellectual property management, value-adding to primary production as well as research and development in the agricultural sector.
